The luxury liner Prinsendam a Holland America Line ship carrying 319 passengers and 203 crew members catches fire during a violent storm. It was somewhat smaller than average size for its day carrying about 350 passengers and 200 crew. On board were 571 passengers and crew sailing into a storm which would soon claim another ship.

The 110-foot 335 m crab-fishing vessel capsized and sank in the Bering Sea north of Unimak Island in the Aleutian Islands with the loss of three crewmen. Whats even scarier is that cruise ships only account for a tiny percentage of sea vessels that sink. On October 11 1980 the Prinsendamcapsized and sunk only 7 years after being built.
